What can therapy do? Let’s zoom out to zoom back in. Here’s the natural flow to our journey together:
Practice: Slow down and make space for something new to emerge.
Relate: Connect both with your uniqueness and how you are part of a whole.
Contextualize: Gain self-compassion and empathy through understanding how history, intergenerational patterns, and culture impact how we experience the world.
Rewrite: Craft a new narrative for your life that embraces our multitudes and our human capacity.
Every person is a thread in the fabric of a greater system. We go through life collecting pieces from our surroundings. These are stories, ideas, and a legacy passed down to us. Eventually, we have a moment of awakening.
You’re here now. Welcome!
When we find ourselves at odds with established frameworks or societal norms, it's often a signal that the traditional way of operating no longer serves us.
“These are the times that try our souls... Each of us needs to be awakened to a personal and compassionate recognition of the inseparable interconnection… between ourselves and all the other selves in our country and in the world.”
— Grace Lee Boggs, a Chinese American revolutionary
Why culture and what do you mean? Culture provides the context that shapes and influences our psychological and emotional well-being. Your unique and collective culture are a multifaceted set of shared beliefs, values, customs, traditions, and social norms. In essence:
You are your family heritage.
You are your race and ethnicity.
You are your social structure.
You are your values.
You are your generation.
You are your religious/spiritual beliefs.
You are your peer group.
You are your professional choices.
Let’s break this down, and put it back together with loving intention. At the end of the day, we’re all trying to be better. At the end, it is just us.
